How to Replace the Extruder Controller Board

Required tool:

2mm hex wrench

1. Power off the printer using the rocker switch located at the rear of the machine.

2. Open the buckle securing the Extruder Connection Cable (ECC) at the extruder head.

Gently flex the barbed clip so it is allowed to pass through the opening on the buckle, which should allow the buckle to be swung open to release its compression on the cable.

3.At the printhead, with the flexible latch depressed on the connector, carefully pull the colorful wire harness connector plug out from the header.

It is recommended to only grasp the solid housing of the connector plug for leverage.

Pulling from the wires on the connector plug may damage the component.

4.Use a 2mm hex wrench to remove the two screws securing the Extruder Connection Board cover located on top of the printhead.

5.With the board cover removed, carefully disconnect the plugs connected to the Extruder Connection Board on the printhead.

Note: The connectors for the fans on the printhead use similar black wires. It is recommended to label the outermost fan connector to ensure that it is properly placed on the replacement board.

Note: These threeconnectors, marked below, use a flexible tab to secure themselves to their respective header connections. Unplug the connectors by pinching the tab and pulling upwards.

6.With the plugs disconnected, use a 2mm hex wrench to remove the two screws securing the Extruder Connection Board component to the printhead.

7.Gently remove the Extruder Connection Board component in the direction of the arrow, shown below. There is a small tab extruding from the board component that helps with the seating of the Extruder Controller Board on the printhead.

Note: Damage to the board could be caused by excessive tilting when sliding it away from the printhead if the tab has not fully cleared the tab’s slot on the printhead.

8.When the former Extruder Connection Board has been carefully removed, prepare the replacement  component for mounting to the printhead.

-Reassembly-

9.Carefully orient the replacement Extruder Connection Board to align the tab with the tab’s slot on the printhead. Once it is oriented properly, tuck the wires into the cable management slots, shown below, and mount the board component to the printhead.

Use the 2mm hex wrench to reinstall the two screws securing the Extruder Connection Board component to the printhead.

10.Reconnect the cables to their respective header connectors on the Extruder Connection Board.

11.Reinstall the connection board cover while ensuring the cables are housed within the cover.

Then, install the two securing screws using a 2mm hex wrench.

12.At the extruder head, carefully align and seat the Extruder Connection Cable (ECC) into the “U”-shaped portion of the buckle. The zip-tie on the ECC (cable) must be positioned below the clamping arm of the buckle.

To avoid damaging the components, do not close the buckle on the zip-tie.

Then, align the ECC connector plug with the exterior header on the extruder, and carefully slide in the component. The latch typically makes an audible click sound.
